DATA_DESCR The domain VIT contains the results of surveys of areas under vines in statistical tables. The data of the domain have been organised into two collections: - vit_an contains all available data from annual intermediate surveys. These surveys collect only data on areas under vinesáof wine grape varieties.á - vit_bs includes the data collected via basic surveys every ten years. The scope of these surveys is the area under all type of vines. Surveys on vineyards are used to collect information on vines and wine production in the Member States at different geographic levels (Member States and regions) and over time (follow up the changes); thus they provide basic information in framework of the common market organisation of wine. The intermediate annual surveysá cover the area under vines of wine grape varieties in the holdings and relate to changes which have taken place in that area during the preceding wine-growing year. Information regarding the following characteristics is available: - area under vines for wine grape varieties, - area under vines grubbed or no longer cultivated, - area under vines replanted, - area under vines newly planted. All of these are broken down according to their normal use for the production of - quality wines psr (produced in specific regions), - other wines (including wines compulsorily intended for the manufacture of certain potable spirits obtained from wine with a registered designation of origin). The areas under vines cultivated with wine grape varieties are also broken down into yield classes based upon the potential and (optionally) effective yield per hectare (hl/ha of grape must or wine). á The basic surveys cover all holdings having a cultivated area under vines normally intended for the production for sale of grapes, grape must, wine or vegetative propagation material for vines. Information regarding the following characteristics is available for each unit: - agricultural area in use, - area under vines cultivated; broken down according to its normal production into: area under wine grape varieties (separate the quality wines produced in special regionsá and the other wines), area under table grape varieties, area planted with root-stock for future grafting, area cultivated solely for production of vegetative propagation material for vines (subdivided into nurseries and parent vines for root-stock areas), area under grapes intended for drying (raisins). The areas under vines cultivated with wine grape varieties as recorded in the basic surveys are broken down into yield classes based upon the potential and (optionally) effective yield per hectare (hl/ha of grape must or wine). Data are available for different territorial breakdowns for each country (wine-growing regions). Data is available for the following EU Member States: Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, Portugal, United Kingdom.
CLASS_SYSTEM The territorial breakdown classification is related to wine production or administrative regions. Some countries are using NUTS units, while others use special wine-growing region.
STAT_CONC_DEF á Agricultural area in use (UAA) is the total area of arable land, permanent pastures and meadows, land under permanent crops and kitchen gardens. Area under vines (cultivated area) is the total area under vines, in production or not yet in production, intended for the production of grapes and/or vegetative propagation material which was subjected to regular cultivation to obtain a marketable product. Area under wine grape varieties for quality wines is the area under wine grape varieties suitable for the production of quality wines produced in specified regions (psr) conforming to the EU and national provisions. Area under wine grape varieties for other wines is the area under grape varieties cultivated for the production of wines other than quality wines. Wine-growing year is the period which begins on the 1st of August and ends on the 31st of July. Wine grape variety and table grape variety are defined in Council Regulation (EC) No 479/2008áon the general rules applying to the classification of vine varieties. Quality wines psr:á Council Regulation (EC) No 479/2008áprovides for the identification of quality wines psr based on criteria of delimitation of the production area, of variety, of cultivation and wine-making methods, minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume, of yield per hectare and of assessment of organoleptic characteristics. Vegetative propagation material for vines, nurseries and parent vines for rootstocks are as defined in Council Directive 68/193/EEC on the marketing of vegetative propagation material for vines. Age of vines is calculated from the wine-growing year in which they were planted or grafted. Grubbing is the complete removal of all roots on an area planted with wines. Discontinuation is the cessation of regular cultivation operations on the area planted with vines to obtain a marketable product. Planting is the definitive establishment of vine plants or parts of plants, grafted or not, with a view to producing grapes or establishing a parent vine for rootstock. Replanting right is the right to replant vines as a single crop on an area equivalent to that grubbed, under the circumstances laid down byáCouncil Regulation (EC) No 479/2008 over the period of eight wine-growing years following the year during which the grubbing, duly declared, took place. Replanting is the definitive establishment of vine plants in accordance with a right of replanting (former existing vine). New planting is the definitive establishment of vine plants for which a new planting right is agreed by the appropriate national authority. Potential yield is the average yield. Effective yield is the actual yield in the reference year. The definitions areágiven in EU legislationá(Annex II of 991/79/EEC Regulation and 764/80/EEC Decision). á
STAT_UNIT The statistical unit surveyed is the agricultural holding (a single unit, both technically and economically, which has a single management and which produces agricultural products).
STAT_POP The target population in case of the basic surveys is the universe of the agricultural holdings cultivating vines. In case of the intermediate surveys the target population is those holdings which are cultivating vines of wine grape varieties. Vines cultivated in the open air in Member States with a total area under vines of less than 500 hectares, vines cultivated under glass and vines produced on very small areas solely for home-consumption by the growers are excluded from the surveys. In the Member States concerned, statistics should be produced for each territorial unit for those vine varieties which together constitute at least 70% of the total area under wine grape varieties, and, in any case, for those varieties which constitute 3% or more of the vineyard area. The remaining varieties may be grouped together according to the colour of the grapes.
REF_AREA Data are collected only in those Member States on whose territory the area of vines cultivated in the open air is not less than 500 hectares. At present data from nine Member States are available in the basic survey and for ten Member States in the annual survey. The data are available on different territorial levels: country and wine-growing regions that sometimes correspond to NUTS (II or III) regions or groups of NUTS regions: - Wine-growing regions are used in France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Austria; - Level NUTS II is used in Greece; - Level NUTS III is used in Italy; - Luxembourg, Cyprusáand the United Kingdom constitute a single wine-growing area.
