methods, notes and classification Wastewater treatment plants by treatment level methods, notes and classification

This section provides statistics, indicators and meta-information on environmental pressures and the state of the environment.

Uses of the Data

The data can be used in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of EU environmental policy, in particular the sixth environment action programme (6th EAP). This is done in close partnership with the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The Sixth Environment Action Programme (6th EAP)

The 6th EAP, adopted in 2002, is the EU’s ten-year (2002–2012) policy programme for the environment.
The 6th EAP identifies four key priorities:

  • Tackle climate change −
    • to achieve the EU's target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 8 % by 2008-2012
    • to target more radical global emission cuts in the order of 20 % by 2020
  • Preserve nature and biodiversity −
    • to avert the loss of species and their habitats in Europe by completion of the Natura 2000 network and by developing biodiversity action plans
    • to pay greater attention to protecting landscapes, marine environments and soils
    • to establish measures to prevent industrial and mining accidents
  • Protect environment and health −
    • to completely overhaul the EU's risk management system for chemicals
    • to develop a strategy for reducing risks from pesticides, protection of water quality, noise reduction and a thematic strategy for air quality
  • Promote the sustainable use of natural resources and improve waste management −
    • to increase resource efficiency and make resource use independent of economic growth
    • to increase recycling and waste prevention with the aid of an integrated product policy and measures targeting specific waste streams, such as hazardous waste, sludges and biodegradable waste
Strategies of 6th EAP

In order to implement the 6th EAP, the European Commission adopted seven thematic strategies covering the following fields:

The data in this domain focus on the environment and the impact of economic activities on it. The following areas are covered:

  • waste generation and treatment, including recycling;
  • water resources and use wastewater treatment;
  • environmental protection expenditure;
  • environmental taxes;
  • plant protection products (sales and usage);
  • air pollution and climate change;
  • land use.

Two additional data collections cover the impact of specific economic sectors. The part on agriculture includes data on pesticides, fertilisers and organic farming, the part on transport covers various environmental aspects including transport efficiency and prices.
