CLASS_SYSTEM Combined Nomenclature sub-headings are used to calculate the international trade in chicks.

STAT_CONC_DEF The statistics cover hatchery activity, placement of chicks and trade in chicks. The results are expressed in egg or chick numbers. Please find below data on the definitions of eggs, chicks and poultry and their categories and uses covered in the statistics. 1. "Eggs for hatching" means poultry eggs falling within subheading 0407 00 11 and 0407 00 19 of the Combined Nomenclature intended for the production of chicks, classified according to species, category and type and identified in accordance with Regulation (EC) 2782/75. 2. "Chicks" means live poultry the weight of which does not exceed 185 grams falling within subheading 0105 11, 0105 12 and 0105 19 of the Combined Nomenclature, of the following categories: a) Utility chicks: chicks of one of the following types: i table type chicks: chicks intended to be fattened and slaughtered before reaching sexual maturity, ii laying chicks: chicks intended to be raised with a view to the production of eggs for consumption, iii dual purpose chicks: chicks intended either for laying or for the table; b) Parent stock chicks: chicks intended for the production of utility chicks; c) Grandparent stock chicks: chicks intended for the production of breeding parent stock chicks. 3. "Establishment" means the establishment or part of an establishment for each of the following sectors of activity: a) Pedigree breeding establishment: an establishment, for the production of eggs for hatching intended for the production of grandparent stock, parent stock or utility chicks; b) Breeding establishment: an establishment for the production of eggs for hatching intended for the production of utility chicks; c) Hatchery: an establishment for incubating eggs, hatching and supplying chicks. 4. "Capacity" means the maximum number of eggs for hatching which may be placed simultaneously in incubators excluding hatchers. 5. DOMESTIC FOWL (Gallus domesticus) chicken, broiler: fowl in which the tip of the sternum is flexible (not ossified); cock, hen, casserole or boiling fowl: fowl in which the tip of the sternum is rigid (ossified); capon: male fowl castrated surgically before having reached sexual maturity; poussin, coquelet: chicken of less than 750 g carcass weight (expressed without giblets, head and feet). 6. TURKEYS (Meleagris gallopavo dom.) (young) turkey: bird in which the tip of the sternum is flexible (not ossified); turkey: bird in which the tip of the sternum is rigid (ossified). 7. DUCKS (Anas platyrhynchos dom., cairina muschata) (young) duck or duckling, (young) Muscovy Duck: bird in which the tip of the sternum is flexible (not ossified); duck, muscovy duck: bird in which the tip of the sternum is rigid (ossified). 8. GEESE (Anser anser dom.) (young) goose or gosling: bird in which the tip of the sternum is flexible (not ossified). The fat layer all over the carcase is thin or moderate; the fat of the young goose may have a colour indicative of a special diet; goose: bird in which the tip of the sternum is rigid (ossified); a moderate to thick fat layer is present all over the carcase. 9. GUINEA FOWL (Numida meleagris domesticus) (young) guinea fowl: bird in which the tip of the sternum is flexible (not ossified); guinea fowl: bird in which the tip of the sternum is rigid (ossified).

STAT_UNIT These statistics are established on the basis of the activities of hatcheries and laying farms. The results are expressed in thousands of animals/eggs.

STAT_POP Hatcheries are required to report monthly on their production activities by species, category (selection, reproduction, use) and use (laying, broiler, mixed).

REF_AREA European Union, Member States. These statistics cover Member States' national territory.
